Find the Right Hairstyle for You

Have a “long” face. Or a large forehead? There are so many different hairstyles to compliment the shape of your face. The possibilities are endless. So how do you choose?

A great hairstyle does more than keep your locks in check - it can shape your entire look, complement your features, and boost your confidence. The right hairstyle can make you look more attractive and confident. But with endless cuts, styles, and trends, how do you find the right hairstyle? Finding the right hairstyle that suits your face shape, hair texture, and personality.

Your daily routine and lifestyle should significantly influence your hairstyle choice. If you're always on the go, you might prefer a low-maintenance cut that's easy to style. If you often attend formal events or work in a professional setting, a more polished look might be appropriate. Remember, the right hairstyle for you is one that fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Bangs, Curls, and Waves!

Consider other features like your nose, eyes, and forehead. For example, bangs can draw attention to your eyes, while varying part styles can affect the appearance of your forehead or nose.

Using bangs, someone with straight hair can create the appearance of more width. Chin-length bobs and cuts are effective options to create an illusion of width. Curls and waves also add width. Avoid short layers that add volume on top. Bangs can make your face appear shorter because they cover up large foreheads. If a long face is not a problem, you may want to consider looking for a style that involves long, curly hair.

Hair, in its diverse forms and textures, offers countless possibilities for self-expression. This post will guide you through the world of straight and curly hairstyles, highlighting their unique characteristics and providing styling tips to enhance these natural textures. Different hair types have unique characteristics that can influence what cuts and styles will look best:

Straight Hair

This hair type can typically handle sleek, short hairstyles very well. Longer styles might require layers or texturizing to add volume and movement. Straight hair, known for its elegant, smooth texture and shine, lends itself to a variety of stunning hairstyles:

  • Long and Sleek: This classic style showcases the glossy texture of straight hair. To keep it sleek and shiny, use a smoothing serum and consider regular trims to keep ends healthy.

  • Bob or Lob: These timeless styles work wonderfully with straight hair, providing a sophisticated and chic look. The bob (shorter) or lob (longer bob) can be tailored to flatter different face shapes.

  • Layered Cuts: Adding layers to straight hair can provide movement and dimension. This is especially beneficial for those with fine hair as it can create the illusion of volume.

  • Bangs: Whether you opt for whole, side-swept, or curtain bangs, this style can add a focal point and frame the face beautifully.

Wavy Hair

This versatile hair type works well with a variety of lengths and styles. Long layers can help manage frizz and add definition to waves. Curly hair, with its volume and texture, is all about embracing and enhancing your natural curls:

  • Short and Curly: Short hairstyles, like pixie cuts or short bobs, can look stunning on curly hair, creating a style full of volume and personality.

  • Long Layers: Longer styles with layers can help define curls and reduce the "triangle effect" (where the hair is flat at the roots and voluminous at the ends).

  • Curly Updos: Updos, like messy buns or braided crowns, can showcase your curls and keep them under control.

  • Bangs: Yes, curly-haired people can rock bangs too! Curly bangs can frame your face and add an exciting dynamic to your hairstyle.

Curly Hair

Short curly cuts can add volume, while longer lengths can help weigh down and define curls. Layering can help shape curly styles but should be done carefully to avoid adding too much importance. Very few looks turn the head more than long, curly hair. If you have long curly hair and are having trouble with “frizzing,” one way to stop that is not to brush your curls. Take the time to use your fingers to break up curls, or you will continue to have the problems you are already facing.

Curly and coily hair, renowned for its texture and volume, is naturally beautiful and versatile. These hair types allow for many stunning hairstyles, from free-flowing curls to sculpted afros. Curly hair, characterized by its s-shaped circles, lends itself to an array of stylish hairdos:

  • Long and Curly: Long, free-flowing curls can make a dramatic statement. Enhance your curls with a curl-defining cream or gel to reduce frizz and add shine.

  • Curly Bob: This versatile and chic style can give your curls a defined shape while adding volume.

  • Updos: Curly hair looks stunning when styled into an updo, whether a simple pineapple, a high ponytail, or a braided bun. These styles showcase your curls and keep them under control.

  • Curly Bangs: Contrary to popular belief, curly hair can rock bangs too! They add a fun and flirty element to your hairstyle.

Coily Hair

This hair type can be prone to dryness, so hydration is critical. Short styles can show off texture, while longer classes offer versatility for different looks.

Coily hair, known as type 4 hair, is known for its tight curls or coils and voluminous afros. Here are some beautiful styles:

  • TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro): This style is excellent for those who have recently done the big chop or prefer shorter hair. It's low-maintenance and beautiful in its simplicity.

  • Twist/Braid Outs: These styles involve twisting or braiding the hair when wet and then letting it dry to create defined and stretched coils.

  • Protective Styles: Braids, twists, or locs look beautiful and protect your hair from environmental damage.

  • Afro: This iconic style celebrates the natural volume and texture of coily hair.

Face Shape

One of the most common mistakes when choosing hairstyles is not knowing the shape of the face. Different hairstyles can highlight or downplay your facial features. There are six face shapes. Oval, square, round, heart, long, and diamond shape face. You can determine your body by looking at your hairline, width, length, and jawline.

Oval-shaped Face

With balanced proportions, most hairstyles will suit this face shape. An oval-shaped face is the most versatile for hairstyles because it is evenly proportioned. A heart-shaped face is wider at the hairline. Hairstyles that make the bottom half of the face appear more comprehensive are better. Square-shaped faces are broad. The forehead, cheekbones, and jawline are almost the same width. Hairstyles that soften the strong jawline are flattering on square-shaped faces.

Round Face

Longer, layered cuts can help elongate the face, while volume at the crown can add height. Round faces have no angles or corners. Styles that elongate the look and make it appear more oval are better. Long-face shapes need hairstyles that make the face appear more expansive. Diamond face shape has a narrow chin with a forehead and jawline the same width; the widest part of your face is the cheekbones. Like oval faces, diamond face shapes can wear any hairstyle.

Square Faces

Square faces, characterized by a broad forehead and a strong, angular jawline, hairstyles that soften these features are typically flattering. Soft, layered cuts can help ease angular features, and side parts or sweeping bangs can offset a strong jawline. This can be achieved with longer, layered cuts that add movement and texture. Additionally, side parts or sweeping bangs can help offset the symmetry of a square face and draw attention to the eyes.

Heart Faces

This shape suits styles that add volume at the bottom to balance a wider forehead. On the other hand, heart-shaped faces are wider at the forehead and narrow towards the chin. To balance these proportions, hairstyles that add volume at the bottom can be beneficial. For instance, long, side-swept bangs can help narrow the forehead, while shoulder-length bobs or long, wavy styles can add fullness around the jawline.

Long Faces

This face shape has a high forehead and a robust and elongated jawline. The goal is to add width to balance out the length of the face. Hairstyles with layers can add volume on the sides, creating an illusion of a shorter, more balanced look. Consider styles with bangs or fringe, as they can shorten the face by covering a high forehead. Waves or curls can also add width to the front. Avoid long, straight hair with no layers, as it can make the face appear longer. There are some styles that you will need to avoid. Any class with extraordinarily long or concise hair will end up elongating your face.

Diamond Faces

This face shape is most comprehensive at the cheekbones with a narrow forehead and jawline. The goal is to minimize the width at the cheekbones and create a more balanced look. Hairstyles that add width at the forehead and chin area, such as fringes or chin-length bobs, can be quite flattering. Layers around the chin and neck can soften the face's contours, and side parts can help balance the features. It's best to avoid high updos or slicked-back styles that might make the cheekbones appear wider.

Research Ideas

There are many magazines and websites dedicated to hair care topics. For each person, there is a different style. Find pictures, and try to imagine how each one looks on you. Does it accentuate your best features? Does it hide the worst? Do you like it? That is the best and most important decision.

Consult a Professional

A skilled stylist or barber can provide personalized advice based on their understanding of hair textures, cutting techniques, and current trends. Don't hesitate to seek their opinion and communicate your wants clearly to ensure you get a cut and style you'll love.
