How To Avoid First Date Disasters

First dates can be awkward and nerve-wracking. Notwithstanding, that first impressions can also set the tone for the rest of the relationship.

First dates can be exciting, promising, and a little nerve-wracking. Despite it, you can put your best foot forward and have a good time. Who knows, your first date might be that date with destiny, where you finally find love. It's an opportunity to meet someone new and possibly spark a romance. However, they can also be unpredictable and occasionally disastrous.

Knowing what you should be doing and what you must avoid on a first date can mean the difference between whether it progresses to the second date or the first and last encounter with Mr. (maybe) Right. Knowing what makes a perfect date, you can go on a first date with confidence and self-assurance. Here are some tips to help you navigate the first-date waters and avoid common pitfalls:

1. Plan Ahead

A successful first date begins with a good plan. Choose a location that is comfortable and conducive to conversation. Keep the first date relatively short and casual. A coffee date or a walk in the park can be less pressure than a formal dinner.

2. Be On Time

The fastest way to make a wrong impression is to show up late. Punctuality shows respect for the other person's time and demonstrates that you take the date seriously.  The first impression is the lasting impression. Being on time for a date makes a great impression.

If you are late, your date will think you don't care. Worse, your date may decide they don't want to wait for you and will leave before you arrive. If an unforeseen event happens and you are running late, be sure to communicate that as soon as possible.

3. Put Your Date at Ease

Everyone gets very nervous when they go on a first date. Avoid distractions like your phone. Be attentive and engaged in the conversation. Show genuine interest in what your date is saying. Laughing at your date's jokes is one great way to make them feel comfortable and show interest in them. If you make your date feel comfortable, you will be more relaxed and have a good time on the date.

∎ Be Yourself

While it's natural to want to impress your date, it's important to be genuine and authentic. Trying to be someone you're not can lead to unrealistic expectations and disappointment.

4. Keep Conversation Lively

Keep the conversation positive. You do not want to show up for a date and have nothing to say or ask all night. Be interesting and keep the conversation alive. Make notes ahead of time of interesting topics that make good conversation.

Show a valid interest in what your date has to say. Pay attention when they are talking to you. Make a conscious effort to hear your date's words and message. It helps them know that you care about what they are saying.

While sharing some challenges or struggles from your life is okay, focusing too much on negative aspects can bring down the mood. Don't talk about yourself all night. It is not all about you. It's more about getting to know someone you find desirable regarding dating. Ask questions and give them a chance to talk. If you do all the talking and do not let them get a word in, chances are it will be your only date with them.

5. Mind Your Manners

Basic manners like saying please and thank you, being kind to the waitstaff, and listening attentively can make a positive impression.

∎ Be Respectful

Respect your date's personal boundaries, and don't make them feel pressured or uncomfortable. If you sense they're uncomfortable with something, respect their feelings.

∎ Keep Your Ex in The Past

No one wants to hear about your ex. This is a new person and a new start. Your date does not want to know what your ex did or didn't do. This is a huge turn-off and a red flag that can reduce your chances of having a second date. Focus on your current date and find out more about them.

∎ Manage Expectations

Keep your expectations in check. Remember, not every first date leads to a second one, and that's okay. View each first date as an opportunity to meet someone new and learn about yourself.
