Is Internet Addiction a Thing?

The word addiction is a serious problem. It can take over your life. Going online all the time to the detriment of other things is no different from drug, alcohol or gambling addiction.

Internet addiction is defined as excessive time spent on the internet or obsessive use of the internet. Usually for compulsive reasons, with no regard for personal consequences such as social isolation or financial hardship. It is an uncontrollable and insatiable craving to get online. It is a more complex problem than simply a need to be online most of the time.

Like any other type of addiction. It is the behavior that is addictive, not the technology. Gambling, social media, shopping, auctions, adult content, and dating sites, for example, are all breeding grounds for addictive behavior. Sufferers become irritated when they are unable to access their favorite websites. When they become reliant on getting a quick fix from these online activities, the behavior becomes addictive.

The most common symptoms of Internet addiction are withdrawal symptoms when not using technology, problems at work or school due to excessive time spent online, and loss of interest in other activities due to spending too much time online.

It can be caused by several factors such as genetics, environmental factors, social media use, and even video games. It is difficult to determine whether someone has an internet addiction because of the lack of clear diagnostic criteria, but it can be recognized by the following signs:

  • Excessive time spent online

  • Loss of interest in other activities

  • Neglecting responsibilities and personal relationships

  • Social withdrawal or seclusion

Addicts are frequently attempting to avoid dealing with other problems. Something is fueling the addiction, and getting online all the time is the only way to get away from it.

A person may be using the internet to get away from a relationship difficulty. They may go online to avoid conversation. Instead of going out for drinks with friends, they use the internet to escape from problems at home.

Other sufferers may go online due to compulsive behavior. There is a constant need to check out sites or update social media. Or check emails often. Are all part of internet addiction. Some people go online and shop for items they do not need because it makes them feel happy at the time.

Some people may stay up all night and go online. They will not be able to fully function during the day or at work because of this. Like any other addiction, sufferers experience withdrawal symptoms if unable to go online. They can become anxious and feel they cannot live without it.
