To wax or to shave? Perhaps you were going for the “just stepped out of the shower look” or maybe you are just averse to hair being there at all. The problem is, where the heck do you start?
Pubic hair removal has become a common practice for both men and women, with personal preferences and cultural norms varying widely. When it comes to pubic hair removal, there are several methods to choose from, including shaving, waxing, sugaring, and using depilatory creams.
There are several options available to you for getting rid of unwanted hair. You may choose to go for an entire wax session, or you might prefer to use either a depilatory or hair removal cream. From shaving to waxing, we’ve collected all the information you need to make sure you’ve got the right pubic hair removal solution for you.
1. Waxing
Waxing is a form of semi-permanent hair removal. It is the most popular hair removal method. It involves using a sticky wax, which is applied to the skin. The warm wax is then spread thinly over the area, and strips of fabric are quickly used to remove it from the skin in the opposite direction of hair growth.
In this way, hairs are removed from hair follicles at the root. It’s the best way to have unwanted hair around the bikini line removed. Go for an extended bikini wax or landing strip, or get everything removed with Brazilian wax.
Waxing is relatively inexpensive and uncomfortable during the time of the procedure. When it’s over, the skin in the pubic area is soft and stubble-free. Another benefit of waxing is that it lets you control where you want pubic hair removed. It’s a quick process that can be done on your own at home.
Waxing is not a permanent hair removal treatment. Hair will grow back in a few weeks, so the waxing process will have to be repeated for a long-lasting effect.
2. Sugaring
Sugaring is a technique that is like waxing. This technique uses a sugar-based organic mixture instead of wax. The paste has a honey and lemon mixture applied to the skin. As it hardens, it traps the pubic hairs in the paste pulled quickly from the skin to remove the hair.
Sugaring has a much longer shelf life than wax (one to two years versus about a month with wax). It doesn’t need to set up times and cooling periods, it is less painful, and the cost is a third compared to waxing.
In short, sugaring is more accessible, less painful, and cost-effective than waxing. The only tools needed are sugar and lemon juice - both available in any kitchen.
3. Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is a newer form of hair removal which guarantees permanent hair reduction. It targets the pigmented hair follicles with a pulsing light, stunting hair growth. It is relatively painless, and the treatment only takes a few minutes, though several treatments will be required.
Although laser hair removal is an effective hair reduction treatment, it is not guaranteed to remove all hair and other hair removal methods will still need to be used. Laser hair removal is not practical for treating light-colored hair, and treatments are expensive.
4. Electrolysis
One of the most successful methods for permanent hair removal is electrolysis. Electrolysis hair removal can remove or reduce pubic hair. It is the only method that will altogether remove pubic hair for good. It uses an electric current through the hair follicle, which fries the root of the hair to stop hair growth.
Depending on the amount of hair, you will only need one treatment. This lasts anywhere from two to twelve hours. Electrolysis can be pretty painful, but not as painful as waxing, and it is an expensive treatment.
5. Shaving
Shaving is the most common option. It is cheap, easy, painless, and embarrassment-free. To use shaving as a pubic hair removal method, wet and lay in the bath/shower for about ten minutes. This softens your skin and makes it easier to shave.
Use a good quality, un-fragranced shaving cream that is for removing pubic hair with a new razor designed for sensitive skin to shave in the direction of hair growth. Be careful not to cut yourself. Never shave “against the grain,” as this can cause cuts, ingrown hairs, and other problems.
Shaving is fast and easy, but the downside is that it tends to leave behind stubble. Avoid applying the gel anywhere near your vagina to avoid infection if you cut yourself.
6. Depilatory Creams
Depilatory creams use chemicals to dissolve hair. They are a good option when you want to tidy up your bikini line with as little pain as possible. They are also easier to use and less messy, with minimal irritation and ingrown hairs. But they are less effective at plucking out short and fine hairs. Only use depilatory creams to remove excess hair outside the bikini or brief line. They can irritate the skin due to the harsh chemicals in them.
