Steps To Cancel Your Online Order


We have at least been in a situation where we ordered something online but later changed our minds. Or maybe you got caught up with clicking that ‘buy now’ button. Either way, you opted not to buy it anymore.

So what happens when you no longer want to buy the item yet you have already paid for it online? Well, this is where the order cancellation comes in! There are multiple ways that you can cancel an order online and still have your money refunded. But this differs with the companies, what you ordered for, and involved retailers. Here are steps to follow when canceling an order.


1. Cancel Immediately


Try to cancel the online order as soon as possible. Most online merchants will not be able to cancel or refund your order once it has shipped. The sooner you cancel the order, the better and more likely it is that it will be resolved. As a result, cancel the order before it ships.


Make duplicates of all order confirmations. Take screenshots of important phone numbers and links to customer service. You will have easy access to the company's cancellation procedure if you need to cancel the order.


The majority of online stores have a page that explains how to cancel an order. It's a good idea to read this before placing your order. If you've already ordered the item, sign in to your account and review the steps for canceling an order. Here are the most common methods for canceling an online order.


2. Cancel Online


Sign in to your account and find your order listed. Then, click “Cancel” or fill out the cancellation form. Make sure to provide your name, email, phone number, confirmation number, order number, and a reason for the cancellation. The seller needs these details so they can easily track your order and cancel before shipping.


∎ Send an Email



Some companies may require you to write an email with the order details, personal details, and the reason for cancellation. In this method, you need to be as clear as possible and provide all the necessary information. You are only communicating through emails and may take longer before they review your email.


∎ Call In

Call the customer service number provided on the confirmation email or order page. This is way faster than sending an email if the website has a 24-7 customer service line. It is a good idea to try both the email-form order cancellation method and call to ensure your cancellation is received.


∎ Keep Track


Most sellers will always send you an email to notify you of your order cancellation request. Keep an eye out for an email with a cancellation confirmation. The customer service representative may provide you with a confirmation number over the phone. Keep this for future use.

Check your credit card statement to see if you were refunded if you successfully canceled the order before it shipped.

If the funds are not credited within 15 to 30 days, follow up. Please keep in mind that some refunds can take up to 30 days to appear on your billing statement.

If the seller does not accept cancellations, you are unlikely to receive assistance from your credit card company. However, if the retailer has a cancellation policy and you follow up, courts and credit card companies will frequently rule in the customer's favor.


3. Cancel After Shipment


If for some reason, you were unable to cancel your order immediately. You may still be able to return the order and get your money back.


Call the customer service number and ask them to stop the shipping. This should be done immediately after you receive a notification of your order has been processed for shipping.


If you get an email that says that the order can’t be canceled because it has already shipped. In some cases, the customer service representative can stop the shipment in transit.


Side note: If your order has been shipped, some sellers may deduct money from your credit to cover the shipping costs. So ask how much they charge for delivery services.


If you haven’t been able to reach the seller. And your order is “Sign on Delivery.” You can refuse to sign the delivery note. Wait for the UPS, USPS, DHL, or FedEx person and tell them that you refuse to receive the delivery. Signing proves that you accept the merchandise. It will be sent back to the return address.


Ask the customer service number how they will process your cancellation. In most cases, it will be treated as a return, and shipping costs will be deducted, but you will get a full refund when the shipment is returned.


Keep records of the date and the tracking number so that you can use them if the package is not properly returned. The refund should arrive within 30 days.


4. Return or Exchange


When you receive the package, open it and look for a return policy. If there is one, be sure to follow it exactly. The package should then be sealed and returned to the recommended shipping company.


In the returns section of your packing slip, see if the company offers free returns. If they do, make sure you deliver the package to a location that offers free return shipping, such as FedEx or UPS. Otherwise, you will be responsible for the shipping costs to return them.


Keep a copy of the return form and include it with the package. Drop the package and request a receipt to prove you followed the instructions and placed the package in the correct location. When returning items, it is a good idea to obtain a delivery signature as well as a tracking number.
