Summer Skin: No to Burns and Bites

Re-emerging from the indoors during the winter months, it's time to get into summer. But, summer is only enjoyable if you are well prepared to protect your skin against the sun and pesky bugs.

Summer weather fun outdoors can leave the skin exposed to sun damage and bug bites. Not to mention other not-so-fun-for-the-skin summertime challenges.  Regardless, you can keep your skin glowing and healthy with the right skincare products and follow a good skincare routine to stay glowing this summer!

1. Summer Skin Challenges

Combining heat, humidity, and sun exposure in the summer can lead to several skin challenges. The sun’s rays can cause severe damage to the skin, and the hot weather can make it challenging to stay calm. Heat and humidity can cause your skin to produce more oil, leading to a shiny complexion and potentially clogging pores. The best option is good skincare defense from burns, bites, bumps, itches, and rashes.

∎ Sun Damage

However, amidst all the fun and frolic, the soaring temperatures and increased UV exposure can take a toll on your skin.  UV exposure can lead to skin damage, causing premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and increasing the risk of skin cancer.

∎ Bug-a-Boo

Another summertime danger is insect bites from pests such as bees, spiders, fleas, and ants. These bugs are everywhere and tend to be particularly bothersome. A taste can lead to itchiness, pain, swelling, or even dangerous allergic reactions.

∎ Dehydration

The summer heat can dehydrate your skin despite the humidity, leaving it dry and lackluster.

2. Summer Skincare Routine

Avoid the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when it is bright. Take your daily walk in the morning or late afternoon. Many insects breed in water, so stay away from stagnant pools and soggy grass. To combat these challenges, it's essential to adapt your skincare routine for the summer months:

∎ Cleanse Properly

Given the increased sweat and oil production, a good cleanser is summer skincare must. Opt for a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser that removes impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils.

∎ Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores. However, be sure not to overdo it. Aim to exfoliate 1-2 times weekly, and always follow up with a moisturizer.

∎ Stay Hydrated

Even in the summer, hydration is vital. Swap out heavy creams for lighter, water-based moisturizers or gels that provide hydration without making your skin feel greasy.

∎ Sun Protection

Sunscreen is a must, regardless of the season. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Remember to reapply every two hours or more often if you're swimming or sweating. Block sunlight with a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher. Apply sunscreen half an hour before going out and reapply every couple of hours.

If you've spent too much time in the sun, aloe vera, chamomile, and green tea products can soothe and repair the skin.

∎ Lips and Eyes

These areas are often overlooked but are especially susceptible to sun damage. Use a hydrating lip balm with SPF and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and the sensitive skin around them. Wear UV-protected sunglasses and hats with 4-inch brims to cover your eyes, ears, scalp, and neck.

∎ Cover Up

Wear loose-fitting, tightly woven clothes that reach your wrists and ankles. Keep dress colors neutral and keep perfumes to a minimum. Insects are attracted to bright stains and pungent odors.

∎ Bug Repellent

Use a spray to repel bugs such as ants, fleas, mosquitoes, and flies. A non-toxic, all-natural spray made from essential oils with no harmful chemicals is best.

3. Diet and Lifestyle

Skincare doesn't stop at topical treatments. What you put into your body can have a significant impact on your skin's health:

  • Hydrate: Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

  • Eat a Balanced Diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats will provide the nutrients your skin needs to stay healthy.

  • Exercise: Regular exercise boosts circulation, which helps to nourish your skin and keep it vibrant.
