Straight Talk About Your Selfcare

Do you find yourself putting other people's needs before your own? And what about you? Don’t you need a break? What about your priorities?

In the rush and bustle of modern life, it's easy to neglect our own well-being. However, self-care is not just a trendy buzzword; it's a fundamental part of maintaining physical health, mental well-being, and overall life balance.

Suppose you are constantly running around for people. Getting everything they want and not having a second to get things done or focus on their needs. Then you are not a priority, and you can soon find yourself stressed. This can lead to poor health.

Selflessness and selfishness are two very misunderstood terms. Taking care of yourself first is not selfish. What you want to achieve here is "real selflessness." The kind that gives both you and others what you all need. The selflessness with no regard for your own good is exhausting. You have to take good care of yourself! Nobody is going to do it for you. You are doing yourself a favor.

1. Prioritize You

There's a common misconception that taking time for self-care is selfish or indulgent. On the contrary, self-care is essential for your well-being and enables you to take better care of others.

By making self-care a priority, you're not only improving your own life but also enhancing your interactions with others. Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup! So, let's put the notion that self-care is an indulgence to rest. It's time to embrace self-care as the essential health-promoting tool that it is.

Creating a self-care routine that works for you is a personal journey. Here are a few areas to consider:

  • Physical Health: This might include regular exercise, a healthy diet, adequate sleep, and regular medical check-ups.
  • Mental Health: Practices like mindfulness, meditation, journaling, or therapy can be beneficial.
  • Emotional Health: Spend time doing things you love, connect with loved ones, express your feelings, and learn to say no when you need to.
  • Spiritual Health: This could include prayer, meditation, time in nature, or any activity that helps you feel connected to yourself or a higher purpose.

2. Take Your Time

Your life is your life! You have the same twenty-four hours in a day. It’s time to let others know that you deserve a break. What you agree to spend your time doing, should benefit your values and goals and uplift your spirit. A firm 'NO' to a request allows you a life-changing 'YES'. Talk to your spouse, family, friends, or associates. If someone needs something from you which might 'put you out’ a little or a lot, then refuse.

3. Set Boundaries

It’s important to set boundaries from the beginning. While you may try to set boundaries and respect others, it’s getting hard on your self-worth. If you think people are being mean and selfish towards you, it’s time to set boundaries. Others should respect your decision.

If you are a stay-at-home Mom, you work a lot to keep the house clean, cook food, take care of kids, and so on. Family members might start taking you for granted. Everyone gets the weekend to enjoy, but not you! It’s time to let others know that you deserve a break. Talk to your family members. Let them know you need a day on which you will relax and enjoy. Don’t be afraid; you deserve it!

At your workplace, if your coworkers ask you to do things that are not part of your job responsibilities. You have to set boundaries, otherwise, it will be hard for you! You have to learn to say 'No' when needed. They may ask you to complete their work. You should set boundaries. Let others know respectfully that you can’t do their share of the work. It’s time for others to take responsibility and do their respective tasks.

4. Maintain A Balance

Maintaining a balance can help you keep your sanity. Sometimes, it’s hard to say 'No', especially when it’s your kids or family members. Under such circumstances, you have to maintain a balance. Let’s say your spouse wants you to cook dinner. Then you should ask him to do laundry or any other task. In this way, you have some help with the household chores.

It’s important that you set expectations from the beginning. The other person should understand what you can or can’t easily do! It’s important that you strive to maintain a balance. You have to take care of your self-esteem also! You are important too.
